Remy Kitchen Bakery
Brief
Located in the legendary Metropol Hotel, Remy Kitchen Bakery embodies contemporary style with minimalist touches. The challenge was to design an interior worthy of its prestigious setting while preserving historic details dating back over a century.
Concept
The interior by S+S Studio (Sundukovy Sisters) reimagines the traditions of a classic French café through the lens of modern minimalism. The contrast of warm wood paneling against sleek stainless steel creates a dialogue between heritage and contemporary design.
Layout
The two-level space, framed by tall windows, is visually connected by translucent orange glass blocks that lend an airy feel and unify both floors into a cohesive composition. The staircase – featuring veneered panels and stone – serves as a transitional element, seamlessly blending historic and modern architecture.
The wine room, a contrast to the main dining areas, retains a separate entrance from the hotel.
Challenges & Solutions
Historic elements were thoughtfully integrated into the modern interior, striking a balance between tradition and innovative design. On the second floor, original plasterwork and metal frames were preserved behind glass panels of varying transparency, illuminated to highlight their intricate beauty. The vintage flooring was complemented with custom-matched modern tiles. Despite spatial constraints, the layout maximizes seating without compromising comfort.
Interior
Guests are greeted by a spacious atrium offering a view of the second level.
American walnut and stainless-steel finishes harmonize with the preserved historic flooring, creating a sense of space continuity.
A neutral color palette, enriched with natural materials and textures, softens the overall aesthetic.
Warm wood tones flow across the walls, while the bar’s cool steel accents heighten the contrast between luxury and restraint. Lighting is meticulously curated – a blend of ambient ceiling lights and strategic spotlights casts a warm glow, while linear fixtures accentuate the plasterwork, adding depth and delicacy.
Plush, curvaceous sofas evoke the building’s architecture roots, infusing the space with comfort and sophistication.
Tables clad in American walnut veneer weave warmth into the design, their clean lines underscoring elegance.
The wine room centers around a natural marble tasting station with two seats. Deep wine-colored walls, lacquered panels, and tonal drapery cultivate an intimate, refined ambiance. Soft lighting enhances the cozy atmosphere, inviting guests to savor the moment.
